The knowledge of possible variations in the PCB laminate material properties due to the soldering conditions is an essential input in the selection of appropriate laminates.;An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of lead-free processing on key thermomechanical, physical, and chemical properties of a range of FR-4 PCB laminate materials. The laminate material properties were measured as per the IPC/UL test methods before and after subjecting to multiple lead-free soldering cycles.;The effect of lead-free soldering conditions was observed in some of the material types and the variations in properties were related to the material constituents. Exploring novel interactions between 4-chlorobiphenyl and deoxyribonucleic acids at the organismal, cellular, and molecular levels. $49.99 Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a diverse group of chemicals with a broad range of toxicity to both humans and other organisms. Although large-scale production of PCBs ceased over thirty years ago, these chemicals persist not only in our air, soil, water, and food, but also within our bodies. Therefore, discovering novel modes of PCB toxicity remains a highly relevant task, and the overall goal of this dissertation is to illuminate new aspects of toxicity for one specific congener, PCB3, a major component of PCBs found in air in buildings and in large cities.;PCB toxicity has long been examined in vivo using rodents. This work was extended to include mutagenicity of PCB3 in female transgenic BigBlue F344 rats. Our findings indicate that female rodents are resistant to PCB3-induced genetic mutations when compared with male transgenic F344 rats. Both mutation frequency and mutation spectra were markedly divergent for female rats compared to male rats, in agreement with previous studies performed with environmental carcinogens using F344 BigBlue animals.;Next, the current work’s focus shifted to a novel target of PCB3 toxicity, the telomere, a suspected sensitive target of PCB3 genotoxicity. Results show that indeed telomeres were shortened during a twelve week exposure to a PCB3 quinone metabolite, and also after a six week exposure to PCB3 parent compound and a dihydroxylated metabolite in both primary and immortalized cell lines.;The final experiments in this current work were designed to test the hypothesis that PCB3, before metabolic activation, has an inherent affinity for DNA. Data indicated that PCB3, along with PCB15, formed noncovalent interactions in the presence of sheared genomic DNA. PCB3 was also found to alter the melting temperature of DNA duplexes.;The current federal regulatory framework assumes that receptor activation is the overriding mechanism of PCB toxicity to humans.
